Department of Transport parking concessions for disabled and blind people. The Blue Badge Scheme provides a national arrangement of parking concessions for people with severe walking difficulties who travel either as drivers or passengers. The Scheme also applies to registered blind people, and people with very severe upper limb disabilities who regularly drive a vehicle but cannot turn a steering wheel by hand. It allows badge holders to park close to their destination, but the national concessions apply only to on-street parking. Details are set out in section 9 of the leaflet. In addition, other concessions may be abailable to badge holders - see section 17.
Blue badges replaced orange badges on 31 March 2003.

The Cinnamon Trust is a National Charity for the elderly and their pets. It seeks to relieve the anxieties, problems and sometimes injustices faced by elderly and terminally ill people and their pets, thereby saving a great deal of human sadness and animal suffering.
The Trust was founded in 1985 by Mrs Averil Jarvis whose determination and dedication has ensured that the manifest need in fully addressed. It is named after her Corgi, Cinnamon, who died in her 17th year.
The Trust also helps terminally ill pet owners. There is a national network of over 6,000 community service volunteers. There is a national fostering service provided whose owners face a spell in hospital, in volunteers’ own homes. Owners are kept in touch with visits if possible or regular photos and letters.
The Trust has 2 sanctuaries at Poldarves Farm near Penzance, Cornwall and Hillside Farm, Lewdown, Devon.

BENEFICIAL FOUNDATION - Gardening Project (BFGP)
Ray Hyde – 02392 455500 or ray@beneficial.org.uk www.beneficial.org.uk/gmaintenance.htm
CRITETRIA FOR ACCEPTANCE TO THE GARDENING SCHEME FOR OLDER PEOPLE
The aim of this pilot project is to offer a gardening service for older people in the following areas – Totton, then up to the north of Romsey and north of Winchester, across to Petersfield. (not to include Portsmouth or Southampton ) - see accompanying map.
This gardening project will help these older people adapt their gardens to a more low maintained garden which is easier for them to manage and enjoy, thereby enabling them to stay in their own homes for as long as they choose.
These older people – over 65 years may have difficulty managing their own garden – either temporarily or on a more permanent bases.
The older person may have suffered from ill health/bereavement etc (hospital admission) which has prevented them from managing the garden, which has now become overgrown or unmanageable.
They may have been targeted as being vulnerable at risk of unscrupulous traders due to an overgrown, neglected front gardens.
1) Over 65 years old.
2) Living either on their own or partner of a similar age.
3) Living in their own home – not a private housing association scheme or similar.
4) Live within the defined area of the project.
5) Need some assistance with their garden for a “limited time” – to be reviewed by the BFGP as required.
6) Do not contribute to a maintenance fund for their housing.
The cost will be £10 per hour - this will cover a group of people, some of whom who will have learning difficulties but they will be supervised/working with an employee of the Beneficial Foundation, who will supply all tools/equipment as necessary to do the gardening.
The BFGP will have discretion to adapt the above as they see fit, after discussion with Older Persons Well Being Team.

There are dozens of firms offering insurance: Insurance Agents, Insurance Brokers and Insurance companies themselves. To find those that seem most appropriate to the needs identified, consult the Classified Section of the The Phone Book, or Yellow pages. Insurance cover is obtainable for most risks, and it is really a question of shopping around for the best cover and service that suits the available budget. If an enquirer has little or no exerience of buying insurance, it is probably best to suggest a local broker or agent.
Typical policies cover:
Home and contents, including items lost or damaged away from home.
Car breakdown and general motor insurance.
Travel
Pets
Mortgages and loans
Whole life.
It is important to seek advice on excesses (the disallowed part of claims) and penalties which could invalidate claims; and generally to study the ‘small print’.

It is a charity who has volunteer drivers who take elderly and frail to hospital or to the Doctor’s for a small fee to cover the cost of the petrol. They can also do shopping for the housebound.
The Office Volunteer at Winton House Centre will take the details on a special form. Two days’ notice of request is needed. The client needs to come in or phone on 266046. These details are then conveyed to the weekly Co-ordinator by telephone twice a day. The Co-ordinator finds a driver who can fit in with the time. The person is then phoned at home to say who their driver will be, and that they will be contacted by that person the evening beforehand. The driver then contacts the person so that any last minute details may be sorted out.
Return journeys are fine, as the drivers go away to do their own shopping while they are waiting.
Destinations are as far as London and Southampton, but mainly around Petersfield or to QA (Queen Alexandra’s Hospital, Cosham), or to St Mary’s at Portsmouth.
Sometimes shopping may be done for someone who is housebound, but the Co-ordinator will have to find a volunteer who is willing to do so.

Purpose of organisation is to help elderly people to stay independent. Cash grants are awarded to elderly people on low incomes who are faced with a large, unexpected bill. It will also supply new and nearly new clothing. The overall aim is to help elderly people to stay in their own homes. However, RUKBA owns four residential/nursing homes and flats and bungalows for the disabled. It is able to help only retired professional people who must be of a pensionable age (or over 40 but unable to work because of disability), and have an assessed income below the limits set by RUKBA.

Travel concesssions (eg Senior Railcards) are available for people aged 60 and over. These can take the form of National Transport Tokens, a bus pass or a Rail Exchange Voucher. The bus pass is available for travel locally within Hampshire or any local area within England, except London. Some districts restrict travel to off-peak times, eg Havant after 9.30am, but East Hants is not restricted. However this does exclude Express Coaches and certain limited stop services.
The new passes will be valid for five years from 1 April 2008 until 31 March 2013.
Travel tokens are currently (May 08) worth £24 to those aged 60 - 69, £30 to those aged 70 and over, £50 to those who are permanent wheelchair users, or registered blind or partially sighted, and £75 to those who require a carer in attendance. (Carers can only use tokens when accompanying the person entitled to the travel concession.) Tokens can be used on buses and train services. The tokens are also accepted by community and volunteer care groups, Age Concern minibuses, and more than 40 taxi firms in East Hampshire.
If you travel regularly, the discounts available through a Senior Rail Card are substantially better than its cost.
Concessionary travel is issued through the East Hants District Council at Penns Place, Petersfield. See Partners’ Magazine each May for where to get your new tokens locally. If you have chosen a bus pass, then a new one will be sent out to you when your old one expires..
When making an initial application you need proof of your date of birth, such as a birth certificate or passport. An application form may be downloaded from www.easthants.gov.uk

Walkers meet in the courtyard at Winton House, 18 High Street, Petersfield at 10.00 am on Wednesdays.
Our trained volunteers lead walkers along varied scenic routes which include woods, country paths and streams. The walks take more or less an hour and generally suit all the people who walk with us. Afterward everyone is welcome to join us for a chat and refreshments at an appropriate venue. For those interested there is also a social side to our group, with a Christmas lunch and other events during the year.
Walking with us is a lot of fun. It’s free, sociable and safe walking in a group. There is no need to book just turn up and join in. People are encouraged to walk at their own pace, not to feel any pressure to ‘keep up’ and enjoy themselves, particularly by chatting amongst themselves as they walk.
On the last Monday of each month we offer a longer walk, lasting about two hours, for those who occasionally want to tackle a more ambitious route. Same meeting point Winton House Centre. Time 10.00 am. Dates for long walks: 30th Oct, 27th Nov and 18th Dec.
Do come and join us. Discover more of the local area and make new friends. We offer a nice walk good company and exercise for all ages.
